A 32-year-old woman was abducted and raped by 9 men after she was allegedly kidnapped by an autorickshaw driver in Agartala, the capital city of Tripura.
The victim was on her way home from the hospital on Tuesday night when the incident took place. The woman had visited the Gobind Ballabh Pant hospital as her child was being treated there.
He took her to a secluded spot and then moved her to a van where he gang-raped her along with his friends. After raping, he left her in a semi-conscious state only to be found by a passerby on Wednesday during the wee hours.
The police sprang into action soon after receiving the distress call. A First Information Report was lodged against 9 of them after which the police had succeeded in arresting six who have been charged with rape and criminal conspiracy
One of the police officials told Indian Express: “The victim’s husband has lodged a complaint against nine persons for allegedly kidnapping and raping her. We have arrested six suspects so far. A manhunt is going on for the others. The detainees will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court today.”
“The woman is undergoing treatment at a hospital. She is now stable,” the police said.
The husband said it took him for over an hour to register a complaint as he had to move in between three police stations just to lodge an FIR.
The opposition and the people have expressed their anger through a widespread outrage.
The Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb who is out of the state has directed the DGP to take necessary steps to arrest all the culprits.
The people have demanded strong action against all the nine culprits.
In a similar incident earlier in August, a woman was kidnapped and gang-raped on the outskirts of Agartala city. Two persons were then arrested in the case.
