A 25-year-old woman identified as Nisha Gangar was forced to commit suicide due to continuous torture meted out by her in-laws for dowry in Borivali, Mumbai.
Nisha who hailed from Hubli in Karnataka and was married to Mayank Gangar (28) an engineer had e-mailed her father a few days ago narrating her ordeal.
The father had spent around 25 Lakhs to get them married and had exhausted most of his savings to fulfil their further dowry demands.
Her father lodged a complaint against her Mother-in-law and her husband blaming them for Nisha’s death.
Her father said: “After getting married, Nisha shifted to an apartment in Borivali East. Here, her mother-in-law, Neeta, started taunting her over issues like not keeping the house in order. The duo often had verbal spats.”
One of the police officials who desired to remain unidentified said, “Neeta frequently humiliated Nisha and would not allow her to step out of the house. She shared a series of these incidents with her mother over the phone. Whenever Mayank was asked to intervene, he would side with his parents and never supported his wife.”
When the couple decided to stay apart, the mother-in-law kept a pre-condition of 2 crore Rupees to let that happen.
When her husband was out of town for work, Nisha had emailed her father stating that her life was made a ‘living hell’.
After her death, a case was registered against Nisha’s husband Mayank and her mother-in-law but an arrest is yet to be made.
One of the police officials said, “After Nisha’s death, we registered a case against Mayank and Neeta Gangar under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 498A (cruelty by in-laws, husband) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation is underway.”
