A 20-year-old man was physically assaulted and thrashed by a group of students after he gave a speech inciting communal tensions. He had advocated India as a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ where Muslims were not welcome.
The fight broke out after a few students objected to his speech which he was delivering inside a mall in the Karnataka’s Managaluru on Wednesday.
The video soon became viral that led to the arrest of two assaulters out of which one was said to be a juvenile.
The Mangalore police commissioner appealed the masses not to sensitize the issue as it could lead to communal tension.
P.S Harsha the Commissioner of Police said, “There’s no need to sensationalise the issue. We have registered a case against the attackers, and a search is on to track all the suspects.”
The action was taken against the assaulters after the victim Manjunath Bantwal lodged a complaint.
The Dakshina Kannada region is quite sensitive as it frequently sees communal clashes. During the election in 2018 a few political murders happened where later, both the Hindu and the Muslim groups took to blame each other.
In the year 2015, at least 30 people were killed while properties worth Lakhs were destroyed during the communal tension in the same region.
