A religious group belonging to the Muslim community charged at the police with stones after the cops stopped them from gathering for Friday prayers at Hubbali in north Karnataka, southern India.
The police had no other options left and had to wild cane sticks to disperse the crowd.
The Chief Minister of the state had strongly urged the people not to assemble for any sort of religious congregation but the Muslim community gathered to offer the Friday prayers.
The cops who were then informed of the congregation rushed to disperse the crowd but were charged instead by the violent mob using stones, slippers and rods.
The police then wielded sticks and had to lathi-charge in order to disperse the furious mob.
The police have taken 8 people into custody who instigated the violence and have registered an FIR against 5 women and 50 men under various sections of the IPC and Epidemic act.
A police constable who was injured in the incident was rushed to the KIMS hospital in Hubbali.
While speaking to the media Hubbali Police Commissioner R. Dileep said, “Today the prayers were called in certain prayer halls and people had gathered there. Police on rounds requested them not to gather because of the order of the government and to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease but some people got sentimental about it.”
